![]() But I’d like to think there’s a place for the emotionally complex picture book, too. We are currently in a golden age of picture books, with a tremendous range to choose from. And for those who’ve yet to experience that kind of sadness, I can’t think of a safer place to explore complex emotions for the first time than inside the pages of a book, while sitting in the lap of a loved one. There’s a power to seeing this largely unspoken part of our interior lives represented, too. For instance, an uncomfortable number of children out there right now are crouched beneath a metaphorical piano. In the book world, we often talk about the power of racial inclusion - and in this respect we’re beginning to see a real shift in the field - but many other facets of diversity remain in the shadows. Aside from being an essential story beat, there’s also the issue of representation. Loren and I ultimately fought to keep the “heavy” illustration. To hold them.Īnd maybe this idea also applied to the manuscript I was working on. Maybe instead of anxiously trying to protect our children from every little hurt and heartache, our job is to simply support them through such experiences. But maybe these minor episodes of loss are just as vital to the well-adjusted child’s development as moments of joy. I couldn’t help thinking a fraction of her innocence had been lost that day. And as my wife read her a story about two turtles who stumble across a single hat, I studied my daughter’s tear-stained face. We settled her down and talked to her and eventually got her ready for bed. This rocked her little world and she began sobbing and clinging to my wife’s leg, begging to know what was happening. It was reassuring, uplifting even, but I had failed to acknowledge any notion of adversity.Ī few weeks into the revision process, my wife and I received some bad news, and my daughter saw my wife openly cry for the first time. But when I read over one of the early drafts, something didn’t ring true. ![]() It was going to be something I could share with my own young daughter as well as every kid I met in every state I visited, red or blue. Finding myself overwhelmed by the current divisiveness in our country, I set out to write a comforting poem about love. This particular project began innocently enough. What was I trying to accomplish with these stories? What thoughts and feelings did I hope to evoke in children? This discouraging news led me to really examine, maybe for the first time in my career, the purpose of my picture book manuscripts. ![]() ![]() The feedback our publisher received was that the moment was a little too heavy for children. There is an empty Old Fashioned glass resting on top of the piano. In the scene, a despondent young boy hides beneath a piano with his dog, while his parents argue across the living room. If I had the chance to ask Kate DiCamillo anything, it would be this: How honest can an author be with an auditorium full of elementary school kids? How honest should we be with our readers? Is the job of the writer for the very young to tell the truth or preserve innocence?Ī few weeks ago, illustrator Loren Long and I learned that a major gatekeeper would not support our forthcoming picture book, Love, an exploration of love in a child’s life, unless we “softened” a certain illustration. Just as my plane reached its cruising altitude, it came to me. Christopher Paul Curtis.Ī thoughtful question like that deserved a more thoughtful response. What would I ask an author I admire? Writers like Kate DiCamillo came to mind. But hours later, as I sat in a crowded airport, waiting for a delayed flight, I was still thinking about that girl’s question. I studied all the fresh-faced young people staring up at me, trying to square the light of childhood with the darkness in our current world.Īll of this, of course, was wildly inappropriate for such a young audience - and had little to do with the question - so I just stood there in awkward silence, the seconds ticking by.Įventually I gave the girl some pre-packaged sound bite about dealing with rejection, or the importance of revision, and then our time was up. Puerto Ricans continued to suffer the nightmarish aftereffects of Hurricane Maria. Tensions between America and North Korea were reaching a boiling point. The day before, a man in Las Vegas had opened fire on concertgoers from his Mandalay Bay hotel room. For whatever reason this girl’s question, on this morning, cut through any pretense that might ordinarily sneak into an author presentation.

Using AppsFlyer’s Audiences tool, with its advanced segmentation capabilities and long list of integrated partners, the team at Kabam was able to launch incrementality tests on a variety of channels. “Detailed attribution data provided the insight we needed to confidently scale-out a bold new offline UA campaign spanning hundreds of locations across the United States.” – Roz Hajian, Growth Marketing Product Lead IncrementalityĪfter successfully using AppsFlyer’s attribution data for years to grow its business, Kabam decided to adopt AppsFlyer’s Incrementality solution to measure the incremental lift in in-app purchases driven by their remarketing campaigns. Not only could Kabam rely on the stability of the solution, they could be confident their users were being directed to the most valuable destination every time – without custom configurations or interstitial pages. But to effectively convert arcade gamers into mobile gamers, the team needed a way to seamlessly direct them to the mobile game and measure their activity.Ī QR code powered by OneLink, AppsFlyer’s CX and deep linking solution, transformed the Champions Cards from a collectors item into an effective user acquisition channel: Once scanned, the QR code either added the character featured on the Champions Card to their mobile game or directed those who didn’t have the app to download it. When a gamer started the game a Champions Card was dispensed, encouraging the gamer to try the mobile version of Marvel Contest of Champions. Partnering with Raw Thrills, Dave & Buster’s, and Marvel, Kabam released hundreds of Marvel Contest of Champions gaming cabinets into Dave and Buster’s arcades throughout North America that dispensed Champions Cards – dynamic trading cards featuring one of the characters from the game. The concept revolved around two key components: A re-imagining of the classic super hero trading card and the classic arcade cabinet format. Kabam knew they needed a comprehensive solution that was easy to implement and would help them accomplish their goal faster. Moreover, the rise of mobile advertising has opened new and emerging channels and Kabam was tasked with determining the performance of each channel separately, making the process even more resource-intensive. Kabam ran an internal analysis to better understand the player lifecycle and identify KPIs that could be improved as part of their remarketing efforts but they quickly realized that the process will require a lot of time and resources to complete. ![]() Proving incremental liftĪs Kabam’s install base grew, they wanted to better understand the effects of remarketing ads on their revenue and see how far they could scale and optimize their remarketing strategies to drive the biggest overall business growth. ![]() How could Kabam’s team of experienced UA managers increase usage among their core user base while also introducing Marvel Contest of Champions to non-mobile gamers? For inspiration they turned to the roots of gaming itself – the arcade. The native mobile format of the game excluded a large segment of gamers who didn’t yet embrace the mobile gaming platform. To achieve that, Kabam decided to adopt remarketing strategies into their marketing mix, unlike many other gaming companies at the time who were solely focused on user acquisition. Marvel Contest of Champions has grown to be one of Kabam’s most popular games, an arcade-style fighting game in which over 170 different Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains, such as Spider Man, Groot, and Wolverine, face off head-to-head.Įarly on Kabam realized the importance of keeping their players engaged and cultivating them long-term. As one of the industry leaders in developing entertaining, immersive, and highly social multiplayer mobile games, Kabam is adept at merging consumer behavior with the art of game design. It is loosely inspired by the German novel Three Comrades (1937), by World War I veteran Erich Maria Remarque, the author of All Quiet on the Western Front, which follows the lives of a trio of German World War I veterans in 1970s Weimar Germany.
We know that a Web Cam can "BEGIN" to work well if it run about to 30 FPS (30 images for second) ,for not lagging video, but this is a half true, because if for a video conference 30 fps can to be nice, in Freetrack mode this rules is not valid. You have think about the video whit your Cam like a Cartoon movie.many images that run in high speed (images for second) come out an animations (video),it's not exact to 100% but that was for give you just a simple example of course!Īh!.This rule is also applied to video games and their graphics images for second (FPS)! When you run the Freetrack it will work in video mode and that's mind that will capture the images for to be transmitted like video to the your Monitor PC, FPS = frames per second = Images for second. Resolution and frame rate can always be reduced to conserve CPU resources.Ībout that comparation you can see that the PS3 Eye it's the best cam for Freetrack users about FPS However, modern multi-core CPUs are making this less of an issue. A PlayStation Eye running at the same resolution and frame rate as a TrackIR 4 would be very demanding on a single-core CPU. The Nintendo Wii Remote effectively uses no CPU, NaturalPoint cameras use a small amount and general video devices can use a significant amount depending on the brand and the specific camera settings in use. It is better to keep silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt! by George Eliot <- That's true but whit PS3 eye Cam you are running better that whit any other Classic Cam to 30 fps and the comprimise and the results it's more than acceptable if you think that just you "WASTE" 24 $. The precision of TrackIR and the detailed, patented math that is Vector and True View are not replicated in web cam based software. We have tried the web cam "experiences" and we are glad to see that people are having fun making tracking devices, but there is a very large difference in the motion quality of TrackIR and a web cam based system, it isn't even close in my personal use. Making comparisons to TrackIR, when not even owning one seems irresponsible to me. TrackIR is not mainly hardware, it is hardware and software working together as a PRODUCT. When comparing the resulting motion of web cam based software and TrackIR, the resolution difference is apparent. One good way to test the true optical accuracy of a device is to turn off all filtering. There are high pass filters to remove head motion, this is not an absolute optical pointing device, like TrackIR. When evaluating the web cam based software, it is clear that there are filters in the motion and that it is not precise. The eye can tell reaction times very easily, just look at hand movement and the perception of movement of the cursor on the screen. We have found in our extensive testing that anything less than 80FPS is noticeable by users as added lag.I have seen stated in some recent forum posts that there is no reason to go faster than 30FPS, and that humans can't tell the difference between 33ms of delay and 8ms (with TrackIR). You can not simulate samples by interpolating, especially with human head movement. If you view the image from a web cam when tracking points, notice the large blurs that result when you move your head with some urgency, these are not points, and will not be tracked with accuracy.įPS is VERY important. Not to mention the lack of built in image processing to find the points to track. Web cams have color sensors, which degrade resolution, especially in the IR region, they have very slow shutter times, so you get a lot of motion blur when trying to track points and they are slow, only 30FPS. The only thing this has in common with a web cam is the USB interface. ![]() TrackIR is a 120 FPS B&W sensor an FPGA for image processing and a USB bridge chip, along with a custom lens / IR Filter and IR LEDs. "As the main hardware engineer for NaturalPoint, I feel qualified to comment on the difference between TrackIR and a web cam, and that difference is large. It no longer exists but the first page can still be found on The Internet Archive, since other topics from around the same time still exist it could have been selectively removed when they started censoring FreeTrack. The Ubisoft IL2 forums used to have a 13 page thread created in 2007 titled 'Free head tracking' in which the NaturalPoint President (posting under NP_TrackIR) personally responded to webcam head tracking.
